Box Score 2 TAMPA, Fla. – Freshman outside hitter
Nicole Peterson debuted with a combined 22 kills but the IUP women's volleyball program dropped a pair of matches to No. 1 Tampa and Valdosta State Friday afternoon.
It's the first action of the 2019 season for the Crimson Hawks as they compete in the Courtyard by Marriott-Terrace Hotel Classic hosted by the University of Tampa and Florida Southern University.
The defending Division II national champion Tampa dominated in its season debut, hitting .341 while limiting the Crimson Hawks to a negative hitting percentage with 18 kills in the three-set decision. The Spartans won by scores of 25-11, 25-9 and 25-23.
Peterson was IUP's top scorer with six kills and 7.5 points. Sophomore middle
Jaden Fuller had 3.0 total blocks.
The Crimson Hawks and their offense rebounded in the second match, which included a .345 hitting percentage in a 25-21 set two victory that tied Valdosta State at 1-1. The Blazers came back to take sets three and four by scores of 25-13 and 25-20, respectively, to win in four.
Peterson again led IUP in scoring with 16 kills, 18.5 points and a .289 hitting percentage. She also had a team-best 11 digs.
Junior middle
Jasmine Raudys had eight kills and three total blocks and freshman opposite
Brooke Little came off the bench to tally seven kills and two total blocks.
Up next
This was the first of the two-day tournament in Florida as the Crimson Hawks travel down the road to Lakeland and Florida Southern Saturday. IUP will play Florida Southern at 11 a.m. and Hillsdale at 5:15 p.m.
