Borland’s OT goal lifts No. 25 Crimson Hawks over Shippensburg in opener

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Chloe Borland scored a goal with 1:10 left in overtime to give 25th-ranked IUP women's lacrosse to a 14-13 victory at Shippensburg Saturday afternoon.

It was the 2020 season opener for the Crimson Hawks, who overcame an early 3-0 deficit to take a two-goal lead at halftime.

Katie Hibinger scored her first career goal and IUP's first goal of the season at the 21:13 mark. Almost five minutes later while trailing 4-1, the Crimson Hawks rattled off three straight goals by Leah Hunter, Shannon Hartigan and Kayte Zeiler to tie the game at 4-4.

Jordan Kulp scored with 2:30 to play in the half before Zeiler gave IUP a 6-4 lead on a free position goal with no time left in the first.

Shippensburg (1-1) twice came back to tie the score in the second half before retaking the lead at 11-9 with 11 minutes to play. The Hawks responded with four straight goals, with Kulp scoring twice in the span of 14 seconds.

The Raiders scored with 3:01 to play and then tied the game with 2:20 left to send it to overtime.

In overtime, Chelsea Johnston was called for a foul on a shot when she and the Shippensburg goalie collided. But on the restart, the Raiders passed the ball before the whistle so the Hawks regained control. IUP drew a foul where Borland connected on the game-winner of the free position attempt.
