INDIANA, Pa. - Second half goals by
Kristen Finnerty and
Hannah Scardina pushed IUP women's soccer past an upset-minded Clarion squad in a 2-1 victory Wednesday afternoon at South Campus Field.
Losing 1-0 at the halftime break, IUP received a lightning quick score right out of the gate in the second half as Finnerty scored just seven seconds in to tie the score at 1-apiece.
It didn't take long for the Crimson Hawks to take the lead as Scardina used nifty footwork round the net to fool the Clarion keeper for an easy score less than four minutes later.
Finnerty and Scardina also assisted on each other's goals.
The Golden Eagles managed just four shots the rest of the way, just one in the final 28 minutes of play, as the IUP defense built a wall across its own half of the field to contain the lead. Goalie
Samantha Gildner posted five saves in the net for IUP.
The win was important for IUP to keep pace in the division. The Hawks remain one point back in the PSAC West standing, trailing fourth place Gannon 14 points to 13. The Crimson Hawks improved to 5-3-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the division.
