INDIANA, Pa. - In one of the most dominating offensive performances in the
Joe Lombardi era, the 18th-ranked IUP men's basketball team flew past visiting Le Moyne 106-67 at the Kovalchick Complex Tuesday night.
Six Crimson Hawks scored in double-figures, led by 24 points from senior guard
Shawndale Jones. IUP shot a blistering 63.5 percent from the field and made 12 3-pointers on the night.
The win was the third straight to start the season for the Crimson Hawks while Le Moyne fell to 1-1.
Victory was never in doubt for the Hawks, who raced out to a double-figure lead at 18-8 less than seven minutes into the game. Sophomore forward
Ethan Porterfield scored six quick points while IUP made its first six shots.
The Dolphins cut their deficit to seven points a few minutes later, but the Hawks responded with a 12-3 run to take a 36-19 lead and would later go up by 24 before going into the break with a 55-33 lead. IUP shot 70.0 percent in the first 20 minutes, including 5-10 from 3-point range, and made 8-9 from the foul line.
It was more of the same in the second half, as
Tommy Demogerontas gave IUP a 30-point lead at 73-43 with 15:11 left to play. Junior guard
Armoni Foster put IUP over 100 on a layup with 3:07 left and junior forward
Ousmane Diop made it a 40-point game with just under to minutes to play.
Who stood out
Jones' 24 points tied his career-high he set in the 2020 PSAC Championship victory. He finished 8-14 from the field, made two 3-pointers, and went 6-7 from the foul line. He added seven assists and four steals in 32 minutes.
Foster again got close to a triple double with 17 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds. He was on fire in the second half, scoring all 17 of his points in 17 minutes.
Porterfield also tied his career-high with 19 points, going 8-9 from the field with a couple of free throws. He added five rebounds and two blocks in just 21 miniutes.
Demogerontas nearly posted his second double-double of the season with 11 points and nine rebounds in 28 minutes.
Junior guard
Dave Morris, who was hurt early on in the second half, finished with 16 points on 6-7 shooting in 16 minutes.
Redshirt freshman guard
Bryce Radford came off the bench to score 12 points on four 3-pointers in 26 minutes.
Notes
Earlier in the day D2SIDA released its Media Top 25 with the Crimson Hawks moving up one spot to No. 5 ... IUP is also No. 18 in the NABC Coaches Poll released in the preseason ... This was the 19th straight home win dating back to the 2019-20 season where IUP went 16-0 in its own building ... IUP has now scored 87, 98 and 106 points in its three games this year.
