No. 6 Crimson Hawks see win streak end on Sunday

INDIANA, Pa. - The undefeated start for the No. 6-ranked IUP men's basketball team came to an end on Sunday as the Crimson Hawks fell to visiting Shippensburg 72-60 at the Kovalchick Complex.

The Hawks win streak ended at nine as they fall to 9-1 overall and 4-1 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play. Shippensburg won its fifth in a row and improved to 7-3 overall and 4-1 in the league.

How it happened
The Crimson Hawks held the early advantage as 3-pointers by junior guard Dave Morris and freshman guard Kyle Polce gave IUP a 10-5 lead less than four minutes in. The Hawks later held a 19-15 lead before the Raiders used three straight 3-pointers to go on a 15-2 run and take a 30-21 lead with five minutes left in the half.

IUP cut into that deficit, narrowing the Ship lead to two points twice before the Raiders went into the break with a 36-32 lead.

After falling behind by 10 points early in the second, IUP rallied and trailed 47-44 an Ethan Porterfield 4-point play at the 13:53 mark. But again the Raiders used the 3-pointer to build their lead and cruise down the stretch for the upset victory.

Shippensburg hit 12 3-pointers on the night and outrebounded the Hawks 36-to-33.

Who stood out
Porterfield posted his second double-double of the weekend with team-bests of 19 points and 12 rebounds in 37 minutes. Morris scored a season-best 17 points and snagged four steals.

Notes
IUP entered the game ranked No. 6 in the NABC Coaches and No. 3 in the D2SIDA Media Top 25 polls ... The loss ended IUP's 24-game home win streak, the second-longest home streak under head coach Joe Lombardi (30, 2009-10 to 2010-11 seasons) ... The 60 points is IUP's lowest offensive output of the year ... IUP is averaging 68.7 points in the three games since PSAC-leading scorer Shawndale Jones (25.0 PPG) was lost for the season.

Up next
The Hawks return to the court on New Years Eve when they host Pitt-Greensburg in a non-conference matchup at the Kovalchick Complex. Tipoff is 2 p.m.
