Storms halt opening day of NCAA swimming championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Severe weather and storms in the Birmingham area Wednesday halted the first day of the 2021 NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex. 

After an earlier start to the day for the prelims, the storms delayed the completion of the evenings final events. 

The championship is expected to continue Thursday at 12 p.m. EST with the remainder of the day one finals. All of the scheduled Thursday events will be timed finals starting at 8 p.m. EST. 
 
Day one
Senior Iliana Oikonomou was the only IUP swimmer in the pool Wednesday, competing in the prelims of the women's 50 yard freestyle. Oikonomou finished 20th overall with a time of 23.72 seconds. Her time was 0.12 seconds away from advancing to the finals. 

Up next
Individuals scheduled to compete in on day two include junior Rachel Johnson (400 IM), junior Paige Mikesell (200 free, 200 fly), and freshman Luke Mikesell (200 free).
