INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Crimson Hawks opened their weekend of play with a two-match split at West Virginia State's WVSU Invitational on Friday.
IUP defeated Saint Augustine's with a three-set sweep before falling to host West Virginia State by a 3-0 score. The split moved IUP's record to 6-5 on the year.
The Hawks breezed through their morning match with the Falcons, winning by scores of 25-9, 25-11 and 25-18. They hit .365 with 41 kills in the match, adding 11 more points on service aces.
Gia Cannavino put up a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs while
Maggie Samijlenko handed out 19 assists and had five aces.
IUP played things closely with the host Yellow Jackets in the afternoon, losing by scores of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-18. The Hawks hit just .137 against WVSU as
Nicole Peterson led the way with nine kills, while
Caroline Walsh and
Brooke Little each added eight.
Leah Henderson dished out 26 assists while adding four kills, 12 digs and a pair of block assists.
Bailey Flowerdew tallied a team-best 19 digs.
Originally a four-match tournament, COVID-19 issues caused cancellations from a pair of teams and dropped the length of the trip to one day and a pair of matches. To make up for that, IUP has added a pair of Saturday matches in Greensburg for Saturday as the Hawks will battle Concord at 12:15 p.m. and Seton Hill at 4:45 p.m.
