INDIANA, Pa. – IUP swimming returned to the pool for midweek action inside the Pidgeon Natatorium, beginning the season with a pair of victories against Shippensburg on Wednesday.
IUP claimed a 217-67 victory on the women's side, while the men emerged with a 153.5-122.5 triumph against the Red Raiders. In total, IUP posted 19 total PSAC standards, one NCAA B standard and two school records.
Allison Brownlee logged an NCAA B cut mark in the 1 meter 11 dive with her school record score of 430.00. Brownlee added another school record in the 1 meter six dive with a 252.20.
Paige Mikesell posted three victories on the night, all PSAC qualifying times, coming in the 100 free (54.45), 200 fly (2:09.54) and the 200 IM (2:13.30).
Mikesell and Brownlee accounted for two of six IUP women's swimmers to collect multiple event victories for the meet. For the Crimson Hawk men,
Luke Mikesell notched three first-place PSAC qualifying times in the 200 free (1:45.32), 200 fly (2:02.13) and 500 free (4:55.31).
"The coaching staff is really proud of how the athletes responded to an early season midweek competition," IUP head coach
Chris Villa said. "There was great energy and effort on the pool deck tonight. There were some outstanding performances across the board and bodes well for future successes."
The Crimson Hawks showcased some impressive depth throughout the lineup and into the relay events on Wednesday.
Jordan Crupie,
Rachel Johnson,
AB McCullough and
Kiera-Veronica Scudder all had two wins each for the IUP women.
Crupie notched victories in the 50 back (27.56) and 200 back (2:14.97). She earned a PSAC qualifying time in the 200 back, touching the wall just ahead of teammate
Parker Fanella (2:15.00). Johnson earned PSAC qualifying times in the 200 breast (2:23.36) and 200 free (1:58.89).
McCullough impressed in the sprints with a PSAC time of 24.98 in the 50 free, also nabbing first in the 50 fly with a 26.59. Scudder won the grueling 1000 free, touching the wall in 11:31.30, also picking up first in the 500 free (5:37.03).
Alexander Roth,
Ryan Hartmann and
Jesse Verner joined Mikesell with multiple event wins on the men's side. Roth notched a PSAC time in the 50 free (22.30) and added first in the 50 back (25.42). Hartmann raced to wins in the 50 fly (23.86) and 100 free (48.64), while Verner added a pair of diving victories.
IUP swept the relay events, combining for four victories on the night.
