INDIANA, Pa. – Taking a lead into halftime, IUP women's soccer conceded a pair of tallies from visiting California (Pa.) in a 2-1 loss on Wednesday afternoon in PSAC West play at South Campus Field.
IUP falls to 2-4-4 while Cal improves to 3-5-2 on the season.
Hannah Scardina finished a cross from
Cloe Thoericht for her fourth goal of the season late in the opening half. Kaylee Elwood knotted the game at one with a penalty kick marker and Lindsie Galbreath rounded out the scoring in the 55
th minute, weaving right and scoring into an empty net for a 2-1 edge.
IUP continued pressing forward with a 2-1 deficit, holding large chunks of possession in the second half and finishing the contest with a 16-12 edge in shots. Both goalkeepers were sharp with
Vanessa Berlin collected three saves, while Emily Ouimet made seven stops with six coming in the final 45 minutes.
"We dominated today's possession in the second half and pinned Cal in our attacking zone with plenty of chances despite the unfavorable result," IUP head coach
Noreen Herlihy said. "Our performance was good, but give credit goes to the Cal goalkeeper for coming up big today."
Berlin made a diving save in the first half before Galbreath grazed a shot off the post in the 15th minute.
Kristen Finnerty and
Belle Garzarelli each generated a pair of chances for IUP offensively near the midway point of the half.
Cal seized the lead in the second half with two goals coming under 10 minutes apart. From there, IUP launched five chances on target, all smothered by Ouimet.
Alayna Ryan and
Aislinn Meaney recorded scoring looks in the final 10 minutes, but IUP could not find the equalizer.
Six IUP players recorded at least two shot attempts in the contest. Galbreath posted five of Cal's 12 total shots on the afternoon. Wednesday marked the first win for Cal against IUP in Indiana since September 2013.
