BUFFALO, N.Y. – IUP women's soccer found the back of the net twice in the second half as part of a 2-0 shutout of D'Youville on a windy Saturday afternoon.
Hannah Scardina and
Aislinn Meaney found the back of the net for IUP (3-4-4), which snaps a three-game losing streak with the shutout. Meanwhile, D'Youville (2-9-1) struggled to connect throughout the day with little to show in the second half.
Scardina finished off a pass from
Rachel Onderko for her fifth goal of the season less than two minutes into the start of the second half. Meaney provided the Crimson Hawks with an insurance marker in the 66th minute for her fourth tally of the season.
IUP held an 11-5 edge in shots, peppering eight attempts over the second half.
Vanessa Berlin secured a pair of stops in the first half as IUP used an offensive onslaught to keep the ball in the attacking half.
"I'm pleased for the players to get the win today after a back-and-forth opening half," IUP head coach
Noreen Herlihy said. "We came out of the halftime locker room with way more intent and started combining better with the ball on the ground in windy conditions."
Meaney accounted for all three IUP shot attempts in the opening half, coming in the seventh, 10th and 40th minutes. Maggie Leeds sent one wide right for the final scoring chance for either side in the opening half.
After an early offside call on the Crimson Hawks in the second half, the visitors struck moments later after Scardina broke the scoreless tie. IUP maintained the pressure, doubling the lead with a marker from Meaney at 65:06.
"I was pleased with the second half response to score twice and collect the shutout," Herlihy continued. "Now our task is to take this win and build on it heading back into conference play against Slippery Rock on Wednesday."
Meaney and Scardina accounted for all 11 of the IUP shot attempts on Saturday. Berlin secured her first victory of the season for the Crimson Hawks in goal.
