PREVIEW: Hawks look to clip Falcons on Education Day

INDIANA, Pa. – After shutting down its first two opponents last weekend, the IUP women's basketball team returns to the court for its 8th annual Education Day game, held inside the KCAC on Wednesday. Tipoff is set for 11:00 a.m. with nearly 2,000 students from area schools expected to be in attendance.
 
The Crimson Hawks got off to a 2-0 start, knocking off Davis & Elkins and Lincoln (Pa.) as part of the PSAC/MEC/CIAA Challenge. Rosemont, a DIII member of the Colonia State Athletic Conference, enters with an 0-2 mark.

IUP NEWS AND NOTES
  • IUP boasts a 7-0 record in Education Day games, winning by an average margin of victory by 47 points.  
  • The Crimson Hawks have scored at least 80 points in six of seven previous Educations Day games, holding every opponent to under 60 points.
  • The Hawks have hit program records in recent Education Day games, including 32 points allowed to Pitt-Bradford in 2019 and 125 points scored in the win over Geneva in 2017.
  • Craig Carey earned the first two wins of his collegiate head coaching career last weekend at the KCAC, guided by a pair of strong defensive efforts.
  • IUP allowed just four points in the first quarter last time out against Lincoln. The Lions did not convert their first field goal until nearly nine minutes into the contest. Overall, IUP limited Lincoln to 20.7% shooting and just two made three-point field goals.
  • The Crimson Hawks have relied heavily on their starting lineup for production through the opening weekend of the season. All five starters are averaging at least 34.5 minutes/game entering Wednesday's contest.
  • The guard duo of Kiera Baughman and Maria Cerro have facilitated the IUP offense, combing for 22 of the team's 30 assists last weekend. Baughman paces the team with 16.5 points/game and six steals, while Cerro is second in scoring at 16.0 points/game on 56.5% from the field.
  • Teirra Preston logged her first career double-double in the victory against the Lions on November 12. Preston went 8-of-12 from the floor, recording 21 points and pulling down 14 rebounds in 38 minutes.
  • Alana Cardona and Gina Adams are both contributing in multiple area from the starting lineup. Cardona averages 9.5 points and 8.5 rebounds, while Adams averages 8.0 points and 6.5 boards.
  • The Crimson Hawks have made just six three-point baskets through two games, with three coming from Cerro.

  • The Falcons allowed 23 points in their opening contest of the season and 19 more in the second game, forcing the team to battle back from deficits in both matchups.
  • Rosemont has committed 60 turnovers in two games played with 32 giveaways in a loss to Rutgers-Newark.
  • Britney Fils is the team's leading inside presence, pacing the team in rebounds (21) and blocks (6).
