PREVIEW: IUP women face Duke in Saturday exhibition

INDIANA, Pa. – The IUP women's basketball team will get its first taste of game action, traveling to face Duke on Saturday, November 5. Tipoff from Cameron Indoor Stadium is set for 1:00 p.m.

It will be the first opportunity for the new-look Crimson Hawks and head coach Craig Carey to see the team in a game scenario. Carey took over as the program's interim head coach in late September. Saturday is the lone exhibition game of the season for IUP, which begins the 2022-23 campaign on Friday, November 11.

Meanwhile, Duke welcomes back nine returners for third-year head coach Kara Lawson. The Blue Devils posted a 17-13 mark in 2021-22, advancing to the second round of the ACC Tournament. Duke opens the regular season shortly after exhibition play, hosting North Carolina A&T on Monday, November 7.

TIPOFF NOTES
  • IUP has made seven consecutive NCAA Tournaments after going 21-9 last season, but are tasked with replacing four of the team's top five scorers.
  • Carey is a former assistant coach at Division I West Virginia and looks to bring a fast-paced style of play to the floor this season.
  • The Hawks regularly challenge themselves against Division I schools during their preseason slate. Past opponents include Villanova and Dayton (2021), Ohio State (2018), Notre Dame (2017), Pitt (2014-17), UConn (2012, 2016), Maryland (2015), and Penn State (2014).
  • Kiera Baughman is the team's top returning scorer, averaging 9.7 PPG and 3.4 RPG over 30 contests. She logged double figures in 16 outings, which included a season-high 19 points at Lock Haven in early February.
  • From there, IUP will rely on players taking on an increased role. Gina Adams and Maria Cerro each had limited time in the starting lineup in 2021-22, combining for around nine points per game.
  • With 12 players on this year's roster, the Crimson Hawks will look to the senior leadership of Alana Cardona and Teirra Preston. IUP also welcomes four first-year players to the team for 2022-23.
  • IUP was selected fourth in the PSAC West Preseason Poll, released in late October. The PSAC Western division features no shortage of quality teams once again this season, with California (Pa.) and Gannon occupying the top two spots in the preseason poll.

UP NEXT
IUP hosts the PSAC/MEC/CIAA Challenge at the KCAC from November 11-12. The Crimson hawks take on Davis & Elkins (November 11) and Lincoln (November 12), with both matchups starting at 7:00 p.m.
