Crimson Hawks split Sunday twinbill with Millersville

KINSTON, N.C. - The IUP baseball team split a doubleheader against Millersville on Sunday, dropping the opener 5-1 before winning the nightcap 13-9.

The games wrap up another weekend in North Carolina for the Crimson Hawks, who also split a doubleheader against Lock Haven on Saturday.

The Hawks are now 3-4 overall after two weeks of action. Millersville, a Division II top-25 team in the preseason, are now 3-3.

Game One
The Hawks scored the first run of the game on a sac fly by Peyton Johnson as Harrison Pontoli scored in the first inning. Millersville took the lead in the fourth on two sac flys then added to it with a run-scoring double and homer in the seventh of the 5-1 win.

Game two
IUP and Millersville combined for 14 hits but scored 22 runs in the nightcap. The Hawks put up their 13 runs on six hits and took advantage of three Millersville errors, 13 walks, two hit batters, and three wild pitches.

The Hawks opened the game with six runs in the top of the first, with a single by Austin Mueller - scoring Pontoli - serving as the first run of the game. The Marauders came back with four runs in the bottom half and the marathon game two was on.

IUP added runs in the second and third but Millersville grabbed a 9-8 lead after putting three on the board in the fourth. The Hawks rallied to tie things up in the fifth on a wild pitch and then went on top with a four-spot in the sixth, including a 2-run homer off the bat of Torrey Roper.
