INDIANA, Pa. - The Crimson Hawks had two on with one out in the ninth, but couldn't get a run across as the IUP baseball team lost to Wheeling 3-2 in its 2022 home opener Thursday afternoon at Dougherty Field.
It was the first of three games with Wheeling this weekend as the Hawks fell to 3-5 overall on the year.
Wheeling put the first two on the board, scoring on RBI singles in the first and second innings off of starter
Patrick Apgar.
The Hawks got one back in the bottom of the second, as
Peyton Johnson led off with a double to right field before advancing to third on an error.
Torrey Roper brought him home on a sac fly to center to make it 2-1.
The Cardinals picked up one more run in the fifth but IUP again close the gap back to one with a
Harrison Pontoli RBI single that brought
Jake Cherry around.
IUP didn't allow another run, as reliever
Jeremiah Williams gave up just one hit and struck out four in 4.0 innings. The Hawks put runners on in the sixth and then again in the ninth but couldn't advance anyone past second.

IUP and Wheeling finish up the series Friday with a doubleheader at Dougherty Field. First pitch is 12 p.m.
