INDIANA, Pa. - The IUP baseball team racked up 14 extra base hits and scored 22 runs as the Crimson Hawks swept Wheeling in a Friday afternoon doubleheader at Dougherty Field.
It marked the first twinbill sweep of an opponent since the Hawks took two from Slippery Rock on April 27, 2019.
IUP won the opener 13-10 and the second game by a score of 9-6. The Hawks improved to 5-5 overall on the year.
Game one
IUP plated runs in each of the first five innings, including a 4-spot in the second inning. The Hawks led 10-0 after four innings and 13-2 through five.
Markus Cestra and
Nick Hess had home runs in the second and third innings, respectively, while
Austin Mueller went yard in the fifth.
IUP had to hold on in the seventh as Wheeling brought eight runs across on seven hits and two walks.
Game two
The teams combined for 12 of the game's 15 runs in the first three innings, as IUP led 8-4.
Wheeling added a run in both the sixth and seventh innings but IUP also plated a run for some breathing room in the win.
