Hawks bounce back to defeat Cal U 8-4; game two moved to Tuesday

INDIANA, Pa. - The Crimson Hawks put together a huge 6-run second inning to highlight an 8-4 victory over visiting Cal U Monday afternoon at Dougherty Field.

It was the first win in the series for IUP after the Vulcans swept the doubleheader on Sunday. Monday's second - and final series' game - was postponed due to rainy weather. That game has been rescheduled for Tuesday at 2 p.m.

IUP evened its record at 14-14 and pulled into a tie with the Vulcans for fourth in the division at 6-5.

All nine players in the IUP lineup had a hit in the pivotal second inning as the Hawks totaled six singles and three doubles to rally and take a 6-3 lead. Torrey Roper led things off with a double, followed by singles from Colin Williams and Au'sean Owens as IUP scored its first run. Harrison Pontoli followed with a two-run double, Markus Cestra knocked in a run on a double, and then Austin Mueller, Nick Hess, Peyton Johnson and Davin Landers all had consecutive singles which scored two more runs.

The Vulcans cut IUP's lead to 6-4 with a solo homer to center in the fourth inning. In the fifth the Hawks put a couple more runs inbetween them as Pontoli smashed a 2-run homer to right center to make it an 8-4 ballgame.

Cal U threatened in the seventh, putting two runners on with two outs, but Eli Glass entered to get the final out and pick up the save.

Jimmy Tooley started on the mound and picked up the win, striking out six batters and giving iup four runs on five hits in 4.1 innings of work. Sean Furlong gave up just one hit in 2.1 innings of relief.

Four Hawks had multi-hit games, including Pontoli who finished 2-for-3 with a double, home run, four RBI and two runs scored.
