Crimson Hawks drop final game of Cal U series

INDIANA, Pa. - A push in the late innings fell short as the IUP baseball team dropped a 10-7 decision to Cal U at Dougherty Field Tuesday afternoon. The solo game wrapped up the series between these two teams as the Vulcans took three of four.

The Crimson Hawks fell to 14-15 overall and an even 6-6 in PSAC West play. Cal U improved to 22-9 and moved ahead of IUP in the division standings at 7-5.

The Vulcans did all of the scoring early, putting four across in the second, one in the fourth and one more in the fifth to takea  6-0 lead. IUP starter Joe Dolansky gave way to the bullpen in the second inning after giving up one hit and three walks.

The Hawks got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Torrey Roper blasted his third homer of the year over the fence in left to make it a 6-1 game. Au'sean Owens later advanced to second base but was stranded.

Cal U responded with a big sixth inning, bringing four across on five hits and a walk to open up a big 10-1 lead.

IUP rallied in the bottom half as Austin Mueller led off with a single. Nick Hess followed with a walk and three batters later Davin Landers loaded the bases on a two-out single. Roper continued his big afternoon with a shot to straight away center than one-hopped the fence, clearing the bases as he slid into third with a triple. Owens then brought Roper in with a single up the middle and later scored on a single by Harrison Pontoli to make it a new game at 10-6.

The Hawks continued their rally in the seventh as Colton Burd doubled to right to bring Peyton Johnson around from first. Landers then walked and Roper came to the plate representing the tying run, but a deep fly ball to left fell into a Cal U glove and the threat ended.

Both teams had nine base hits but IUP committed two errors and Hawks' pitchers walked eight batters.

Roper finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a triple, a home run, and four RBI. Owens also had two hits.
