Crimson Hawks' crazy comeback bests Mercyhurst in Erie

ERIE, Pa. - Freshman Kathryn Burke scored the game-winning goal with 36 seconds left to complete a crazy fourth quarter comeback as the IUP women's lacrosse team defeated Mercyhurst 12-11 Saturday afternoon.

Burke scored three of the last four goals to help the Crimson Hawks erase an 11-7 deficit with 6:35 remaining. This was IUP's first win over Mercyhurst in Erie since 2016.

This was the sixth straight victory for the Hawks, who improved to 8-2 overall and took a two-game lead in the PSAC West with a 5-0 league record. Mercyhurst fell to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the division.

Who stood out
Kathryn Burke: 4 goals, 1 assist
Emme Mass: 4 goals, 2 draw controls
Chantal Jimenez: 7 draw controls, 2 caused turnovers

How it happened
Mercyhurst took a somewhat commanding lead at 11-7 with a goal at the 6:35 mark of the fourth quarter. It was the fourth straight score for the Lakers as the game was tied at 7-7 with five minutes left in the third. Mercyhurst held onto its four-goal lead over the next 2:40 as the clock ticked under four minutes to play.

Emme Mass scored on a free position to make it an 11-8 game with 3:55 to play. After a quick turnover caused by Chantal Jimenez, Burke scored to make it 11-9 with 3:39 left.

Jimenez grabbed the ensuing draw control and just over a minute later Jordan Kulp netted a goal to make it a one-score game. Another draw controlled by Jimenez led to the game-tying goal by Burke with 1:31 left.

After a Mercyhurst timeout, Jimenez again grabbed the draw and at the end of the shot clock, Burke scored the go-ahead goal, her fourth of the game, with 36 seconds left.

The Lakers were able to control the ensuing draw but the IUP defense did not allow a shot and Maggie Marsteller picked up a ground ball with seconds to play to clinch the win.
