ERIE, Pa. - A late-inning comeback for the Crimson Hawks fell short in game one as they dropped both ends of its doubleheader with Gannon Friday in Erie.
IUP cut its deficit in the opener to 5-3 in the sixth before losing by a score of 6-3, and then dropped game two 6-2.
That's three straight divisional losses for the Crimson Hawks - and four combined - as they fall to 23-20 overall and 12-10 in PSAC West play. They are now in a tie with Cal U for fourth place in the division. Gannon improved to 24-13 and moved into sole possession of first in the division at 15-7.
Game one
Gannon scored twice in the fourth and three more times in the fifth to jump out on top 5-0.
The Hawks rallied in the top of the sixth, getting two runs across as
Harrison Pontoli singled home
Torrey Roper and
Au'sean Owens to make it 5-2. The following hitter,
Austin Mueller, then made it a 5-3 game with another single as
Markus Cestra came across.
Gannon added an insurance run in the bottom half as IUP's comeback stalled in seventh as the Hawks managed just one base runner.
Game two
Gannon grabbed two early leads with the Hawks coming back to tie the game at 1-1 in the third and 2-2 in the fifth. Pontoli brought home both runs, first with a sac fly then later on an RBI ground out.
GU brought two across in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead then added two more runs in the sixth to take a 6-2 lead into the seventh inning. The Hawks went down 1-2-3 and Gannon preserved the Friday sweep.
