LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The Crimson Hawks had six extra base hits and tied a season-high in runs scored with a 13-1 victory over Lock Haven Tuesday afternoon. It was part of IUP's split non-division baseball doubleheader as the Bald Eagles took the nightcap by a score of 12-1.
The Hawks remained above .500 on the year with a 13-12 overall record, including 8-9 in non-league play. Lock Haven is now 8-20.
Game one
IUP scored in each of the first two innings to take a quick 4-0 lead.
Markus Cestra scored the game's first run on a double by
Peyton Johnson while
Colin Williams and
Harrison Pontoli each had RBI singles in the second.
IUP starter
Ian Logue gave up just one hit in the first three innings before Lock Haven got on the board in the fourth with three hits, including an RBI double.
The Hawks came back with a huge inning in the fifth, highlighted by a two out grand slam by Pontoli.
Torrey Roper and
Davin Landers also had RBI base hits in the inning as IUP put up seven runs to take an 11-1 lead. Pontoli finished 2-for-4 with that home run and six RBI. Cestra, Johnson, Roper and
Austin Mueller each had two hits.
Nick Hess added a two-run homer, his team-leading fifth of the season, in the sixth inning to cap the scoring.
Logue got the win, giving up four hits and one earned run in 3.2 innings, striking out two.
Sean Furlong tossed the final 3.1 innings, giving up two hits and fanning two.
Game two
IUP struck first again with Pontoli scoring on a ground out by
Markus Cestra in the first. Lock Haven then scored in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings to run away with the game. Pontoli and Hess each had two hits.
Up next
The Crimson Hawks face Cal U in a four-game series this weekend. IUP will host two games Friday and head to California for a pair on Saturday.
