ERIE, Pa. - Joelle Snyder had four hits, including the go-ahead RBI single in the opener, as the IUP softball team swept a Friday doubleheader against Mercyhurst in Erie.
The Crimson Hawks won by scores of 6-5 and 4-3 to remain undefeated in the PSAC Western Division with a 4-0 record. IUP won its fourth straight game and improved to 11-9 overall. Mercyhurst fell to 18-10 overall and 1-3 in the division.
Game one
The Lakers took a 2-0 lead in the second but IUP tied the game in the third on an infield single by
Allyssa Schmidt that led to a pair of runs.Â
With Mercyhurst leading 4-2 in the sixth, the Hawks put their rally caps on.
Haleigh Zimmerman led off with a walk and then scored when a single to left by
Anna Ferrucci led to a fielding error. Ferrucci scored three batters later on a single up the middle by
Sara Tailford, tying the game at 4-4. After a pitching change and with two runners in scoring position, Snyder ripped a single up the middle to score both Tailford and
Renee Wall to take a 6-4 lead.Â
With the Lakers attempting to rally in the seventh, a lightning delay forced a pause to the game. Mercyhurst scored one run with two outs but with the tying run on second, IUP pitcher
Amanda Fischer got the final ground out to clinch the win.
Game two
IUP got out to the early 3-0 lead through three innings.
Jenna Rhue knocked in the game's first run in the first inning,
Paige Truax scored on a wild pitch in the second, and Wall had an RBI single in the third.Â
Two RBI singles by Mercyhurst in the fourth cut IUP's lead to just 3-2, as starter
Elizabeth Kasper gave way to
Bella Bucy in the circle. The Hawks put one more run across the board in the fourth but again the Lakers cut IUP's lead to one with an RBI double in the fifth.Â
Bucy allowed one Mercyhurst runner in the sixth and then shut down the Lakers 1-2-3 in the seventh. Kasper picked up the win while Bucy was awarded the save.
