Offensive onslaught pushes IUP women’s soccer past Pitt-Johnstown

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – IUP women's soccer racked up four goals from four different scorers in an impressive 4-2 conference road victory against Pitt-Johnstown on Wednesday.

Aislinn Meaney finished with a goal and two assists in leading the offensive charge for the Crimson Hawks. Sami Nemeth posted a goal and assist, coming on goals under one minute apart in the second half.

Molly Katzmann and Hannah Scardina also found the back of the net, while Rachel Onderko picked up an assist in the victory.

UPJ (3-3-2, 3-2-1 PSAC) had a three-game conference winning streak snapped with the setback, despite tying the game with a goal in the opening half. IUP held a 15-12 edge in shots for the game, using a balanced scoring attack in the road triumph. In total, seven different Crimson Hawks registered at least one shot in the contest.

Both sides found the back of the net following corner kick opportunities in the opening half. For IUP, Scardini converted in the 10th minute off a pass from Meaney for a 1-0 advantage. UPJ knotted the score after a corner as Emily Essler found an open Mackenzie Stephens in the 19th minute.

The Crimson Hawks rounded out the scoring in the opening half, pushing the advantage to 2-1 at the intermission. Onderko played a ball in the middle to an open Meaney, who dribbled in before launching a long looping goal from just beyond midfield.

The go-ahead tally was Meaney's third of the season, giving her the team lead in goals. IUP owned a 7-4 edge in shots over the opening half, while goalie Gildner collected a pair of saves.

The visiting Crimson Hawks registered a pair of early looks from Scardini in the 50th and 51st minutes. IUP stepped up defensively with a blocked shot in the 57th minute, keeping the score at 2-1.

IUP poured it on with a pair of second-half goals just under one minute apart in the second half. Katzmann found the back of the net in the 67th minute, scoring off a pass from Nemeth. Nemeth posted a goal of her own with a high shot from Meaney for a decisive 4-1 advantage.

Essler rounded out the scoring for the Mountain Cats in the 83rd minute, bringing the deficit to within 4-2. Meaney recorded her third multi-point game of the season for the Crimson Hawks with her big day. She has scored at least one point in four of six outings so far for IUP this season.
