IUP sweeps Shippensburg to open swimming season

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The IUP swimming & diving program opened the 2023-24 season on Wednesday at Shippensburg, coming away with a dual meet sweep at the Heiges Field House. The IUP women's squad posted a 135-69 victory against Shippensburg, while the men won by a 121.5-71.5 tally.

IUP won 15 of 22 total events on Wednesday, receiving strong contributions from a talented group of first-year newcomers. Coupled with some experienced returners, IUP showcased the potential for a deep team through one dual meet as the 2023-24 season progresses.

Overall, four IUP swimmers won multiple individual events in the meet.

Freshman Tina Cudina won a pair of individual events in the 50 free (24.89) and 100 free (54.93), also part of the winning 200 medley relay (1:50.18). Sophomore Avital Flaishman added first-place showings in the 200 free (2:00.82) and 500 free (5:28.44).

For the IUP men, stalwarts Athanasios Diamantidis and Luke Mikesell combined for four individual triumphs. Diamantidis rolled to a 2:14.46 in the 200 breast before adding a win in the 100 IM (55.36). Meanwhile, Mikesell touched the wall first in the 200 free (1:43.58) and 500 free (4:46.13).

Freshman Tyler Uhlig nabbed his first collegiate victory in the 1000 free, breezing past the rest of the field in 9:58.16. Teammates Luke Scoboria (10:17.43) and Eric Harter (10:40.95) rounded out second and third place for IUP.

Another freshman, Kasha Stokes, headlines a group of three IUP finishers in the 200 back in 2:06.40. Freshman Lilly Farmer (2:10.36) and Baldani followed in the event for the Crimson Hawks.

Junior Emma McCombs beat out teammate Samira Zambrano (2:20.19) in the 200 fly in 2:18.08. On the men's side, junior Luke Ramalho was victorious in the 200 fly with a time of 2:01.13.
