KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The six-seeded IUP field hockey program gave third-seeded Kutztown all it could handle in the PSAC Quarterfinals, ultimately falling 1-0 at Andre Reed Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
Kutztown (16-2) scored the lone goal of the afternoon at 32:06 with a transition chance early in the third as Erin Gonzalez finished off a cross from Jillian Buchman, who raced down the right side before playing the ball back front.
IUP (8-8) was making just its second playoff since the 2017 season and first for second-year head coach
Kelly Terwilliger. Goalie
Anita Planella posted a pair of first quarter saves as KU held a 6-3 edge in shots.
Neither side could find the scoresheet in the opening half of Tuesday's matchup. Kutztown held a 4-1 advantage in shots over the initial two quarters as Planella posted a pair of saves.
KU advances to the PSAC Semifinals on Friday at Shippensburg. The Golden Bears previosuly bested IUP by a 5-0 score earlier this season, but the Crimson Hawks showed a strong level of competitiveness on Tuesday.
Planella blocked aside a point-blank chance from Jordan Stroup about eight minutes into the opening stanza. The Bears drew the lone penalty corner of the opening half.
The Hawks thwarted a penalty corner chance later in the third with some strong defense, keeping the score at 1-0.
IUP had a pair of scoring looks in the fourth quarter as Mia Kelper stepped out to stop chances from
Devon Johnson and
Jess Davidson.
IUP pulled the goalie with about two minutes left but could not break through down the stretch.
