INDIANA, Pa. – In a quality-played match for both sides, the IUP women's soccer team could not fend off a second half push from an experienced Gannon side in a 3-2 setback on Wednesday afternoon at South Campus Field.
IUP (3-4-2, 3-4-1) conceded the opening goal before battling back in the initial 45 minutes. Gannon (7-2-1, 7-1-0) found the back of the net about two minutes apart to escape with a hard-earned triumph and a fifth consecutive victory.
Gannon held a 21-10 edge in shots and a 9-3 advantage in corners.
Vanessa Berlin posted five saves in goal, including several low stops off crafty offense.
Julia Csernyik and
Hannah Scardina accounted for the IUP scoring on Wednesday with
Avery Clanton notching another assist on a corner kick.
Gannon, the reigning PSAC Champions, received goals from Leah Bermudez, Ella Fadale and Grace Emmanuel. Bermudez scored about five minutes into the game, finishing off a feed from Gabby Boden for a 1-0 Gannon lead.
IUP stayed the course in the first half, eventually knotting the game 14 minutes in on a leaping hear from Csernyik, which came off a looping corner feed from Clanton. Scardina lifted IUP in front with a strike from the middle in the 22nd minute, providing IUP a 2-1 lead.
It marked Scardina's team-best sixth goal of the season and goals in two straight outings for the senior.
In the second half, IUP has a potential third goal waved off due to an offsides. From there, Gannon battled back with two goals in the 73rd and 75th minutes.
