Crimson Hawks Split Season Opening Doubleheader At #23 East Stroudsburg

STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Indiana University of Pennsylvania baseball program rode the arms of Mark Edeburn and Sean Furlong to a 3-1 victory in game one before dropping a 2-1 pitcher's duel in the second contest as the Crimson Hawks used situational hitting and overpowering pitching to go toe-to-toe with the Warriors on their home turf.

Edeburn picked up the first victory of the 2023 season as he got the opening day nod on the mound, going 5.2 innings of two-run baseball, pitching to contact the majority of the afternoon with just one strikeout over 80 pitches.

Furlong came on in the bottom of the seventh and slammed the door shut, striking out the side for his first career save.

Preseason All-Region selection Harrison Pontoli took no time backing up the hype, depositing the first pitch he saw of the season over the right-center fence to give IUP a 1-0 lead just moments into the ballgame. Pontoli extended his on-base streak to nine games dating back to last year, going 2-for-2 with the solo blast, two runs scored and a pair of walks in game one before coaxing a base on balls in the nightcap.

In his debut game donning the Crimson and White, Andrew Sicinski made a great first impression, doubling twice in four at-bats, driving home Pontoli in the third inning for the deciding run.

Jeremiah Williams might have been the most impressive pitcher despite wearing a tough luck loss, hurling five sparkling frames with a half-dozen whiffs, allowing just a single earned run (two total) to go along with just one walk and five hits given up.

Patrick Apgar was as close to perfect as possible, not surrendering one baserunner over the final three innings of game two and averaging a punchout per inning.

Torrey Roper had a pair of hits including a two-bagger and crossed the plate twice with a run batted in on the day and Elijah Dunn contributed a double, a walk and two RBIs.

David Kessler notched the final extra-base hit of the doubleheader for the Crimson Hawks, finishing with the squad's fifth double in two contests while Branden Kanick showed off his wheels with a stolen base during a pinch running appearance.

Indiana (Pa.) will host East Stroudsburg on Monday afternoon for the Home Opener as the two squads meet once again, this time inside the friendly confines of Owen J. Dougherty Field as first pitch of the doubleheader is expected to be at high noon.
