GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Indiana University of Pennsylvania softball program got its season off on the right foot, scoring seven unanswered runs to open game one before using clutch late-game heroics to sweep both contests opposite Wheeling, 8-3 and 5-2.
Â
Both starters in the circle went the distance with neither allowing a single earned run as
Amanda Fischer and
Elizabeth Kasper combined to hurl 14 innings of unearned glory (five runs earned) and five strikeouts between them as Kasper did not surrender a walk over 30 batters faced.
Â
The sticks of
Jordan Sylvia,
Allyssa Schmidt, and
Paige Truax were the big boppers in the lineup for the Crimson Hawks, driving in three runs apiece, hitting .500 (10-of-20) collectively and scoring thrice to form a terrific trio.
Â
Truax stood out in particular on the day as she added two stolen bases plus a triple to her stat line while Sylvia and Schmidt contributed doubles of their own.
Â
Other notable IUP ladies to make an immediate impact were
Tess Smiley, who cranked out a pair of doubles and a stolen base on top of a 3-for-6, three score, afternoon, and
Delaney Patella, who also swiped second base once, drove in a run and scored a run as well as racking up three base knocks.
Â
The women from the Keystone State will play its first true road contest of the year at tournament host Glenville State with first pitch slated for 12:30 p.m. inside the Sue Morris Sports Complex.
