NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Indiana University of Pennsylvania baseball program got three hits out of
Harrison Pontoli and a trio of steals from
Au'sean Owens, but a five-run fourth from Newberry turned a two-run lead into a three-run deficit in which IUP could not recover in a 8-7 setback.
Â
Pontoli was raking the baseball in the series finale, going 3-for-5 (.600) with an RBI single and an RBI double, the only extra-base hit of the afternoon for the Crimson Hawks.
Â
Markus Cestra joined Pontoli in driving home a pair of baserunners, once on a single and the other via sacrifice fly while scoring once as well.
Â
Owens failed to crack the hit column but reached base twice courtesy of a walk and a hit-by-pitch. Once there, he was a blur, swiping not one, not two, but three bases, scoring two times on top of an RBI fielder's choice.
Â
Brady Yard consistently found himself on-base, hitting .667 (2-for-3) with two runs scored and coaxing a free pass.
Â
The pitching duo of
Eli Glass and
Paul Tripi held the Wolves in check over the final two frames, surrendering two hits and striking out one (Tripi) without allowing a run.
Â
Indiana University of PA will take a nearly two week hiatus before embarking on its spring break trip to the Sunshine State, where it will take on Eckerd in a three-game series on March 11 and 12. First pitch of game one is at 6 p.m. in the Turley Athletic Complex.
