INDIANA, Pa. – IUP women's lacrosse spread the wealth and used a commanding start to move ahead comfortably, breezing past Findlay with a 19-1 victory in the opener on Wednesday afternoon at Miller Stadium.
IUP (1-0) zipped ahead 7-0 in the opening stanza and continued piling it on for a 12-1 lead at the intermission. The Hawks took care of business in the second half with a running clock, working in a variety of lineup combinations and goalkeepers in the all-around effort.
The Crimson Hawks utilized nine different goal scorers and had 10 total student-athletes with at least one point on the afternoon. IUP outshot Findlay (0-4) by a 30-7 margin, going 16-for-17 on clearing attempts.
The effort did not drop off on the defensive end as IUP caused 13 turnovers and scooped up 15 ground balls.
Sarah Reustle led the charge with five points (four goals, one assist), adding three ground balls, three caused turnovers and a game-high seven draw controls in the 2023 opener.
Kathryn Burke picked up five points of her own with three goals and two assists, while
Jordan Kulp posted two goals and two helpers.
In total, seven different Crimson Hawks logged multiple points on the day. In goal,
Ashley Andrikanich picked up the win with one save over the initial 45 minutes, giving way to
Mia Courtalis and
Maddy Schramm in the second half.
Maggie Marsteller posted three caused turnovers with
Sami Shutt picking up three ground balls in a balanced effort. The Hawks opened the game with goals on five of their first six shots, utilizing a strong effort in the draw control circle to dictate possession.
Brenna Whiteside opened the scoring just under 20 seconds in before Burk,
Emme Mass, Reustle and Kulp peppered in tallies for a 6-0 advantage.
The Hawks kept the foot on the gas with
Chantal Jimenez rounding out the scoring in the opening frame. IUP quickly stretched its string of unanswered goals to 10 not even five minutes into the second period, responding with a tally from Moyer at 7:03 in the second to start the running clock for the remainder of regulation.
Leading 12-1 at the break, IUP posted two more goals in the third before rounding out the victory with five markers over the final 15 minutes. Moyer,
Maggie Boyle,
Macenzie Haragos and
Alexi Crosby all registered at least one point in their collegiate debuts for IUP.
Danielle Dilorenzo posted her team-best seventh goal of the season for Findlay in the second quarter.
