INDIANA, Pa. – IUP women's lacrosse rattled off its fifth victory in a row, using a five-goal fourth quarter and its traditional stout defense in an 11-5 victory against Shippensburg on w windy Wednesday at Miller Stadium.
IUP (6-3) took control down the stretch after Shippensburg (1-8) sliced its deficit to just one goal in the third quarter.
Sarah Reustle provided her usual all-around stat line with three goals and three caused turnovers, while the Crimson Hawks also got some key contributions from their depth scoring as
Macenzie Haragos and
Brenna Whiteside registered two goals apiece.
Chantal Jimenez dealt out three assists, both leading to goals in the fourth quarter as IUP asserted itself. With her three draw controls, Jimenez surpassed 200 for her career.
IUP used hounding pressure and limited the Red Raiders to just 14-of-20 on clearing attempts, also forcing three possession clock violations. The Raiders received a strong 14-save effort from goalie Kayla Vosburg, helping the visitors slowly slice the deficit to 6-5 with just 2:04 left in the third.
IUP rattled off five unanswered to close out the game, which included two from Ruestle in addition to markers from Haragos,
Maggie Kilgallon and Whiteside. The Hawks held a 31-24 advantage in shots and
Rylee Wilson added four draw controls, helping IUP build its 6-3 lead into the third stanza.
Shippensburg opened the scoring before IUP finished out the first quarter with a 2-1 following tallies from
Leah Moyer and
Kathryn Burke. The Raiders answered back to knot the score in the seocnd before IUP doubled its advantage to 4-2 at the intermission.
Jordan Kulp found the back of the net before assisting Reustle for the final goal of the opening half.
Whiteside and Haragos worked the lead to 6-3 in a back and forth third quarter before the Raiders got back within one. The Hawks eventually pulled ahead with their big fourth quarter.
Sami Shutt grabbed five ground balls for IUP, which has limited each of the last five opponents to under 10 goals.
