CLARION, Pa. -- The No. 23 IUP women's soccer team outshot Clarion on Wednesday evening, securing a 2-0 victory.
This was the second matchup between the two teams this season, with IUP winning both games by the same score. With this win, IUP improved to 7-1-2 overall and 5-1-2 in the PSAC, while Clarion fell to 1-10-0 overall and 0-8 in the PSAC.
IUP dominated the first half, taking 14 shots compared to Clarion's four, but failed to find the back of the net as Clarion's goalkeeper made four saves. Overall, IUP finished with 22 shots, eight of which were on target, while Clarion managed nine shots with five on goal.
The breakthrough came just two minutes into the second half (47:39) when Elle Smith fired a shot through Clarion's defense that hit the crossbar and found the net, she was assisted by Hannah Scardina and Lauren Gunsett.
At the 62:17 mark, Hannah Scardina and Kat Morgan gave Avery Clanton the go ahead, whose shot deflected off a Clarion defender and went in.
For IUP, Scardina had four shots, two on target, and contributed two assists. Ayla Ward, Smith, Clanton, and Csernyik each took three shots, with Clanton's all being on target, while Smith, Gunsett, and Serrano each had one shot on goal.
IUP goalkeeper Makenna Yarrow played the full 90 minutes, making five saves which totals 33 saves for her this season.
With this victory, IUP solidifies its position in second place in the PSAC West Division standings.
