Hard fought win against Edinboro ends bad luck streak for the IUP women’s volleyball team

Indiana, Pa - - IUP women's volleyball (11-6,1-2) had a close call today with the Edinboro Fighting Scots (10-7, 1-3) after five grueling sets (17-25, 25-23,20-25, 25-6, 15-11).

Things started out slow for the Crimson Hawks in their first match against the Fighting Scots. Despite having ten kills, IUP was not able to string anything together, ultimately leading to the loss of the first set 17-25.

The second set was just what IUP needed to get their spark back. After being on a four-game loss streak, IUP was ready to put an end to the pattern of losing. IUP was able to capitalize on 11 kills on their behalf and five errors from the Fighting Scots, earning them a set win of 25-23.

IUP began falling back into old habits at the start of set three. With only nine kills and seven errors, Edinboro was able to overpower the Crimson Hawks 25-20.

Set four was a reminder of who the Crimson Hawks are on the court and why they remain at the top year after year. Right out the gate, IUP went on a four-point run that Edinboro answered with adding only one point to their side of the scoreboard. Despite the effort of the Scots, IUP continued their sequence of runs, with Jessica Neiman placing the final nail in the coffin of the Scots, securing the lopsided set win for the Crimson Hawks, 25-6.

After split set victories, there was no indication as to who would walk away with the win. Early on into the set, IUP went on a run that was answered by a subsequent run by the Fighting Scots. After long rallies on both ends, IUP won the set 15-11, ending the misfortunate losing streak the Crimson Hawks were experiencing.

Despite the contributions from many different players on the team, there were a few names that were constantly involved in play. Charlotte Potvin contributed 13 kills to the game, many taking place in the fourth and fifth sets. Simay Memisoglu led the team with six aces and 15 digs. The standout from today's match was setter Olivia Heidel, who posted 41 assists and 3 blocks for the Crimson Hawks.
