IUP claims both victories against Shippensburg in season opener

INDIANA, Pa. -- The IUP swimming & diving program opened the 2024-2025 season at home this Tuesday, claiming both victories against Shippensburg at Pidgeon Natatorium. The IUP women's team posted a 137-77 win and the men's team posted a 176-47 win. 

IUP won 22 of 26 total events on Tuesday, with a collective effort across the board.

Three standout swimmers from this meet were Sophomore Kasha Stokes, Sophomore Katie Crosscut, Graduate Luke Mikesell, and Sophomore Ty Uhlig.

Stokes took first place in the 1000 freestyle (11:06.32) and the 200 backstroke (2:13.32). Crosscut won the 50 freestyle (25.54) and the 100 freestyle (54.62). Both women were on the relay that won the 200 freestyle (1:41.10), also on that relay were Lucy Vogt and Summer Esson.

Mikesell added two more first place finishes to his career, in the 500 freestyle (4:51.58) and the 200 freestyle (1:43.19). He was also apart of the relay that placed second in the 200 freestyle (1:28.12), joined by Andrew Taylor, Ben Holm, and Nick Vaow.

Uhlig added two more first place finishes in the 1000 freestyle (10:11.70) and the 200 backstroke (1:59.13). His efforts helped his relay win the 200 medley (1:37.98), joined by Patrick Kudla, Luke Ramalho, and Stephen Goff.

Sophomore Catrina Miller secured her first collegiate win in the 200 breaststroke (2:34.76) and was on the relay that won the 200 medley (1:54.13). 

For the divers, in the 1mtr Graduate Jordyn Burkey had a final score of 299.30, Junior Nick Roddy finished with 419.25 and Sophomore Jeremiah Laslavic scored 398.30.

A quote from head coach Chris Villa, "Ship is one of our favorite early season competitors, they always bring intesity. The coaching staff was pleased with the effort and energy, especially for a mid week competition. The athletes were excited to get the first competition under their belts." 

Up Next
IUP continues with a busy opening week on Friday, October 11 with a two day diving competition at the Fall Diving Classic in Clarion, Pa. The swimming program competes on Saturday, October 12 at Graham Natatorium for the PSAC Fall Invitational at 12:00 p.m. and Sprint Frenzy at 2:00 p..m.
