INDIANA, Pa. – The IUP women's lacrosse team found itself on the wrong end of a five-goal spurt by visiting Georgian Court in the fourth quarter on Tuesday, falling 18-13 in the season opener at Miller Stadium.
IUP (0-1) played from behind most of the day, battling back and taking the lead early in the fourth quarter. Georgian Court (3-0) took control from there, dropping in eight of the game's final 10 goals.
Kathryn Burke finished with seven points on one goal and six assists, also active on the defensive end with three ground balls and four caused turnovers. In all, Burke figured in on seven of IUP's 13 goals on Tuesday.
Leah Moyer had three goals with five other players registering two tallies in a well-rounded scoring output for the Crimson Hawks.
Rachel Knight added three caused turnovers and two ground balls, while
Maddy Schramm made six saves in just over 50 minutes of action in goal.
Bryleigh Trechman paced GCU with eight points on four goals and four assists. Remi Reeinhardt logged five points (three goals, two assists), 10 draw controls, three ground balls and three caused turnovers in an all-around showing for the undefeated Lions.
GCU held a slim 33-31 margin in shots and got just enough timely stops from goalie Natalie Moradian in the fourth quarter to preserve the victory. Tied at 10 through three quarters of play, GCU erupted with eight goals over the final 10 minutes.
The Lions picked up some key draw controls in the process of creating the fourth-quarter separation. Ultimately, IUP held a 19-15 edge in draw controls, playing most of the game without standout
Chantal Jimenez, who accumulated two yellow cards.
The Crimson Hawks got the scoring started as Moyer carved inside and buried a feed from Burke just over one minute in. GCU answered with the next three goals, leading 4-2 after the first quarter of play.
Sarah Reustle weaved through for an unassisted mark for IUP in the first, coming at the 1:35 mark.
Reustle converted a player-down marker with her second of the day, opening the scoring in the second and bringing IUP within 4-3. The Lions kept stretching their lead throughout the second before IUP closed the half with a pair of goals under one minute apart.
Macenzie Haragos worked free for her first goal of the season at 2:07 before
Alexi Crosby ripped home the final goal of the half, bringing IUP within 8-7.
It was part of a larger five-goal swing for the Crimson Hawks that carried through much of the third quarter.
Emme Mass,
Maggie Boyle and Moyer flipped the momentum back in favor of the Crimson Hawks with a 10-8 lead following goals at 12:31, 9:43 and 6:00 in the third.
GCU responded with the final two goals of the quarter, knotting the score at 10. Haragos gave IUP its final lead of the contest at 11-10, scoring just 40 seconds into the fourth quarter. From there, GCU reeled off a decisive 8-1 scoring stretch for an 18-12 margin.
Mass deposited her second goal of the game on another Burke assist with five seconds left.
Georgian Court and IUP were playing for just the second time in the all-time series, the first game in 15 years.
