IUP women’s lacrosse uses fast start in first win of 2024

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The IUP women's lacrosse team used a fast start during a 16-9 win at Millersville on a soggy Saturday at Biemesderfer Stadium.

IUP struck early and often, building a comfortable margin by the second quarter in the team's first victory of the 2024 season. The Hawks move to 1-1 on the young season.

Sarah Reustle racked up seven points on six goals and one assist, adding three ground ball, five draw controls and a caused turnover. Reustle continues to inch closer to 100 career points, now with 96 in just 42 games.

Chantal Jimenez reached 100 career points with her third goal of the opening half. She finished with four goals, one assist and six draw controls. Jimenez moved into a tie for third on the IUP all-time draw control list with 270, matching Amy Weinberg (2013-16).

As a team, IUP held a 32-19 edge in shots and went a perfect 12-for-12 on clearing attempts. Millersville (2-1) closed the game with three straight goals, unable to close the gap after falling behind early.

Macenzie Haragos had two goals, one assist and a pair of caused turnovers. She was one of four IUP scorers with multiple goals, along with Emme Mass. Kathryn Burke handed out four assists, now with 10 through the initial two games of the season.

Maggie Marsteller posted her first career goal in the opening half. She also elevated to sole possession of 10th on the IUP all-time ground balls list (109). Mia Courtalis and Maddy Schramm each played 30 minutes in goal.

Rachel Keeny paced the Marauders with two goals and one assist.

Leading 11-4 at halftime, IUP held a 20-5 margin in shots through the opening two quarters. The Hawks reeled off seven unanswered goals through the first quarter and early into the second, pulling ahead 8-1.

Part of that scoring run included five consecutive goals for IUP over the last 7:36 of the first quarter. It helped IUP eventually balloon its lead to 11-2 before Millersville deposited a pair of goals just before the half.

Mass opened the scoring with a player-up tally not even one minute into the contest, pushing IUP ahead 1-0. Reustle and Jimenez carried the Hawks offense from there, helping the visitors move ahead 6-1 through one quarter.

Reustle added her third and fourth goals of the contest, both coming off assists from Burke for an 8-1 IUP advantage. Mackenzie Haragos scored twice for the Hawks over the last 11:31 of the second.

Jimenez recorded the 100th point of her impressive IUP career with a free position goal at the 9:20 mark of the second quarter. Neither side found the scoresheet in the third quarter as IUP maintained its lead.

Both teams registered five goals in the fourth as IUP, including a run of four straight for the Crimson Hawks. Maggie Boyle rounded out the scoring for the Hawks at 5:31, cashing in on a feed from Jimenez for a 16-6 advantage.

The Marauders stopped the running clock with three straight goals to finish out the game.
