IUP women’s lacrosse can’t finish fourth quarter rally in 14-12 loss to Shepherd

INDIANA, Pa. – The IUP women's lacrosse team battled back most of the day, including a rally in the fourth quarter that came up just short in a 14-12 loss to Shepherd on Tuesday at Miller Stadium.

Despite a well-rounded scoring output, IUP slips to 1-2 on the season. Shepherd works its record even at 2-2 on the year.

Shepherd opened the game on a 7-1 run, a margin that IUP sliced to 8-6 by halftime. The Hawks worked the score back even at eight in the third quarter before the Rams rattled off another timely scoring run.

The Hawks closed the game with three of the final four goals, climbing back within 13-2 before the Rams added a final insurance tally at the 7:16 mark.

Maggie Boyle posted a team-best three goals on four shots, scooping up four ground balls for the Crimson Hawks. Sarah Reustle, Chantal Jimenez and Brenna Whiteside recorded two goals each.

Jimenez and Whiteside also dished out an assist, each collecting a three-point afternoon. Reustle made things difficult for Shepherd in the clearing game, picking up four ground balls with four caused turnovers.

As a team, IUP held a 20-10 edge in draw controls with some outstanding individual efforts. Reustle racked up 10 draw controls herself with Jimenez adding seven more. Devon Knee had two, starting off in the circle troughout the day for the Crimson Hawks.

Katie Peredes led Shepherd with four goals and two assists. Down 5-1 in the first and 7-1 in the second quarter, IUP began settling in with a stretch of five straight in the second quarter.

Macenzie Haragos assisted on Boyle's first goal of the day at 9:05 of the second before trimming the deficit to 7-5 with a goal of her own at the 5:02 mark of the first half. In her 50th career game, Jimenez registered consecutive tallies in the third quarter that evened the score at eight.

Two more goals from Boyer and another from Whiteside brought the Hawks within one at 13-12. Rebekah Forney put the game away with the final goal at the 7:16 mark of the first.
