Strong pitching powers IUP past West Virginia State in Saturday sweep

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The IUP baseball team collected its first victories of the season on the road Saturday, knocking off West Virginia State by scores of 3-1 and 4-2.

IUP allowed a combined three runs between the two games, racking up 12 strikeouts on the day. Elijah Dunn added three hits over the two victories for the Hawks, while Blaise Zeiders and David Kessler scored two runs each.

Game One: IUP 3, WV State 1
Mark Edeburn tossed a complete game gem for IUP in the opening game, allowing just two hits over seven innings of work. Edeburn notched five punchouts and surrendered just one run on the day, coming in the second inning.

Edeburn retired 16 straight batters to end the game, not allowing a baserunner after the second inning. It marked the 13th career complete game for the veteran Edeburn, pushing his career strikeout total to 144.

Offensively, IUP got all the run support it needed in the top half of the second on a two-run double from Dunn. Peyton Johnson added some insurance with a run-scoring single in the seventh, handing IUP a 3-1 lead.

Kessler went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored. Dunn added two hits, including the two-run double in the second.

WV State starter Ayden Hodges pitched well in 6.1 innings of action. He surrendered four hits and three earned runs with seven punchouts for the Yellow Jackets.

Game Two: IUP 4, WV State 2 (Nine Innings)
IUP pushed across its final two runs of the day on WV State errors, taking the lead late in extra innings before closing out the doubleheader sweep.

The Crimson Hawks mustered just one run through seven innings, adding three more over the eights and ninth innings. Cooper Baxter and Jimmy Tooley held WV State off the board in the final 1.2 innings, part of a strong pitching effort across the board.

Derrick Shields got the start, allowing two hits over four innings of scoreless action. Jake Black fired 3.1 innings in relief, giving up two runs with two strikeouts. The IUP pitching staff hurled seven strikeouts in game two, including two from Tooley in the decisive ninth inning.

Ethan Schimony recorded two knocks for IUP, while Zeiders scored twice on two walks. Dun plated Zeiders for the first run of the game in the first, the lone run over the initial four innings.

WV State tied the score in the fifth on a solo home run to center. Neither side could break through in the final two innings, sending the game to extras. Ricardo Aponte singles home Zeiders for a 2-1 lead before the Yellow Jackets tied the score back up in the home half of the eighth.

Schimony and Davin Landers each scored in the ninth on infield errors by the Yellow Jackets, setting the table for Tooley to pick up his first career save.
