EDINBORO, Pa. – The combination of aggressive defense and long stretches of possession proved to be a winning formula for the IUP women's lacrosse team, rolling to a 17-5 victory on Saturday afternoon against Edinboro.
IUP continues its success against Edinboro, winning all 17 meetings in the head-to-head series. IUP improves to 3-3 and 2-0 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play.
Edinboro slips to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in the PSAC West. IUP held a big edge statistically, outshooting the Fighting Scots 41-12 and causing nine total turnovers.
Working in a large chunk of the lineup, IUP had 10 different goal scorers and six with multiple goals in the victory.
Macenzie Haragos had three goals, two ground balls and four draw controls.
Chantal Jimenez racked up nine draw controls, moving into second in program history and just six shy of 300 for her career. She posted nine shots on the day, recording two goals, one assist, two ground balls and a caused turnover.
Kathryn Burke opened the scoring, finishing the day with two goals, one assist, four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Maddy Schramm (15 minutes) and
Mia Courtalis (45 minutes) split time in goal.
The Hawks jumped out to a 6-2 lead after the first quarter and expanded it to 11-4 at halftime. IUP continued pouring it on, moving ahead by 10 and starting the running clock on
Julia Steere's goal at the 4:27 mark of the third quarter.
IUP opened the game with a 3-0 lead, scoring all those goals within 43 seconds of each other.
Emme Mass closed the quick-strike scoring run with her 50th career goal off a feed from Jimenez at 9:17 of the first.
The Hawks used another three-goal surge to finish out the first quarter with Haragos converting twice in that stretch. IUP added 10 unanswered goals, spanning the second, third and fourth quarters.
Maggie Boyle started the scoring run for the Hawks, with Haragos, Jimenez,
Brenna Whiteside, Steer and Kiera Baskot all finding the back of the net during that span. It marked the first collegiate goal for Baskot in the fourth quarter.
Steere and
Skyler Hovatter also registered their first collegiate goals during the second half of the victory.

IUP returns home on Wednesday, March 27 for a divisional matchup with Mercyhurst on Saturday, March 27 at Miller Stadium. First draw is slated for 3:00 p.m.
