Hawks snap skid; breeze past Gannon on Saturday

INDIANA, Pa. – Scoring eight of the game's first 10 goals, the IUP women's lacrosse team got contributions up and down the lineup in a 19-7 victory against Gannon on Saturday at a gusty Miller Stadium.

IUP gets back in the win column, moving to 5-7 on the season and snapping a four-game slide.

The win secures the season sweep of Gannon for the Crimson Hawks, which improve to 4-3 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play. Gannon falls to 4-8 overall and 2-5 in the PSAC. IUP has now won 16 straight games in the head-to-head series with Gannon, dating back to 2012.

IUP held a 38-20 edge in shots and made life difficult for Gannon on the clear throughout the game. Using a pair of four-goal surges in the opening half, IUP zipped ahead 8-2 before putting the game away with 11 unanswered tallies.

The 11-0 scoring run began late in the second quarter and spanned until the 4:26 mark of the fourth, starting the running clock as time melted away down the stretch. While both teams committed 19 turnovers, IUP forced several miscues from the Golden Knights in their defensive third.

Julia Steere surpassed her season goal output with four markers on Saturday, adding an assist, ground ball and draw control for a team-high five points. Chantal Jimenez added three goals, two assists, two ground balls and three draw controls.

Leah Moyer found the net three times, while Maggie Marsteller caused three turnovers and added two ground balls defensively. With her two ground balls Marsteller moves into a tie for sixth all-time in program history (123). Maddy Schramm finished with eight saves on the day.

All told, IUP had 11 different goal scorers on the day and 12 players with at least one point.

The dynamic scoring trio of Jimenez, Moyer and Sarah Reustle opened up the offensive floodgates for IUP early, lifting the Hawks to a 4-0 advantage less than 10 minutes into the game. Maggie Kilgallon punctuated another four-goal stretch for IUP with her fifth of the season, expanding the margin to 8-2 with 8:52 remaining in the first half.

Gannon trimmed the deficit back within 8-5 before the Hawks responded with two key markers over the last 1:27 of the half. Steere engineered the IUP offense for large stretches of the second half, at one point firing home three straight for a commanding 15-5 lead.

Already with four goals to her credit, Steere dished off to Rylee Wilson for her first goal of the season with 7:23 remaining.
