ERIE, Pa. — Using a nine-goal second quarter the IUP women's lacrosse team raced past Mercyhurst with a solid 19-9 win on Wednesday afternoon.
A scoring surge of eight straight goals lifted IUP (6-7, 5-3) ahead for good at 11-3. Most of that run came in the second quarter as the Crimson Hawks used a balanced output and strong defense to build their lead.
IUP had seven different players register a point in the victory, including six each from
Sarah Reustle and
Alexi Crosby. Crosby finished with a game-high five goals on five shots.
Macenzie Harogos and
Chantal Jimenez logged four points apiece. Jimenez and
Emme Mass had three goals apiece, while
Maddy Schramm posted nine saves between the pipes.
Whitley Easton posted five goals for Mercyhurst, which sliced its deficit to six goals early into the fourth quarter.
Following a back-and-forth opening stanza, IUP took control. Crosby converted a Reustle pass just over one minute into the second quarter. The Hawks continued pouring it on with Reustle capping the scoring outburst at the 2:31 mark in the quarter.
Reustle and Mass found the back of the net in the final minute of the opening half, stretching the IUP lead to 13-4.
IUP took a 10-goal advantage and started the running clock with Jimenez's second goal of the afternoon early in the third. Mercyhurst finished out the third quarter with three straight markers, trailing 14-7.
The Hawks reeled off five consecutive goals, responding from a Mercyhurst push that spanned early into the fourth quarter. Jimenez,
Leah Moyer, Mass, Harogos and Crosby all factored into the final scoring spurt.
Wednesday's meeting was likely the final matchup between IUP and Mercyhurst with the Lakers transitioning to NCAA DI next academic year.
