IUP baseball falls in doubleheader against Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The IUP baseball team suffered 5-0 and 9-2 setbacks in doubleheader action on Saturday afternoon at Slippery Rock's Critchfield Park.
 
IUP (14-8, 6-4) was the home team for Saturday's doubleheader as the location of the game was changed late last week. Slippery Rock (15-7) combined for 14 runs and 21 hits across the doubleheader.
 
Game One: Slippery Rock 5, IUP 0
IUP mustered just two hits in the contest in a 5-0 loss to Slippery Rock.
 
Slippery Rock got all the offense it needed in the first inning, pushing across three runs in the team's initial trip to the plate. On the mound, Gage Gillot tossed a complete game in 102 pitches. He allowed two hits and worked around four walks, finishing with five punchouts on the day.
 
Eddie Morris punched a two-run homer down the right field line in the first for SRU. Ricardo Aponte and David Kessler posted a hit each for the Hawks.
 
On the mound, Derrick Shields allowed four runs on nine hits over 5.1 innings. He tossed 84 pitches and registered five strikeouts, giving way to Bryce Devan in relief.
 
Game Two: Slippery Rock 9, IUP 2
Slippery Rock racked up six runs in the fourth inning, sweeping the doubleheader with a 9-2 win in game two.
 
The Crimson Hawks held an early 2-0 lead on a David Kessler double in the first inning. The IUP bats went quiet after the first inning as the Hawks registered one hit, a bunt single from Au'sean Owens, the remainder of the game.
 
Meanwhile, Slippery Rock broke the game open with a Michael Kitko single in the fourth inning. Cam Panyko Morris posted three hits for Slippery Rock with three players registering two RBI.
 
IUP had four hits from four different players in the game. On the mound, Mark Edeburn tossed four innings as one of four pitchers utilized by IUP in the second game. Cooper Baxter, Casen Sandri and Sebastian Rosado-Guindin combined for three innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit in that stretch.

IUP closes out its four-game set with Slippery Rock on Sunday, April 7. The doubleheader from Critchfield Park is set for 1:00 p.m.
