IUP baseball splits with Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The IUP baseball team was able to salvage a game in the series with Slippery Rock, winning the second game of the day with a 5-1 victory.

IUP (15-9, 7-5) nearly completed the comeback in game one before getting a strong pitching effort in game two.

Game One: Slippery Rock 3, IUP 2 (8 Innings)
Slippery Rock claimed the series with a 3-2 walk-off win in the eighth inning. The Crimson Hawks extended the game, down to their final out with a two-run single from Harrison Pontoli.

Pontoli and Davin Landers collected a pair of hits apiece for IUP.  Pontoli drove in Landers and pinch runner Mateo Cepullio in the seventh.

Ultimately, it was Slippery Rock's Noah Ross finishing the game with a walk-off sacrifice fly in the eighth inning. Two of the three Slippery Rock runs in the game came off sacrifice flies, with the other after an infield single. The Crimson Hawks mustered little offensively until the sixth inning, placing runners on the corners but unable to break through.

Jake Black and Joey Purcell battled back and forth on the mound, both posting five punchouts. Black allowed seven hits, three runs (two) earned over 99 pitches in a bounceback starting effort.

Game Two: IUP 5, Slippery Rock 1
Keyed by a lockdown starting pitching effort from Nathan Mankoski, IUP utilized some early offense in a 5-1 victory in the second game of the day. Mankowski whirled five innings, allowing three hits and one run in a workmanlike effort.

IUP posted a 2-0 lead in the first innings after a throwing error and single from Andrew Sicinski. Sicinksi logged two hits with Au'sean Owens and Ricardo Aponte scored a pair of runs each.

Pontoli widened the IUP lead to 4-1 with a two-run blast over the right field wall in the third. Pontoli's third homer of the season plated Owens, who drew a leadoff walk at the onset of the inning.

Blaise Zeiders punched a ball to the outfield, scoring Aponte on a sacrifice fly for a 5-1 margin. Dane Samartino closed out the game with the final two innings of hitless relief.
