Big third quarter not enough for IUP women at Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The IUP women's lacrosse team fell behind in the first half and battled back into the fourth quarter, ultimately falling 13-9 to first-place Lock Haven on Saturday afternoon.

IUP (4-6, 3-2) was led by Kathryn Burke offensively with three goals on five shots, adding an assist in the setback. Emme Mass added two goals, three ground balls and two caused turnovers in a well-rounded outing.

Sami Shutt and Kim Carpentiere added a pair of caused turnovers and a ground ball apiece on the defensive end. Lock Haven maintains its positioning atop the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), improving to 10-1 and 5-1 in conference play.

LHU finished with a slight 30-26 edge in shots, while shots on goal were even for both sides at 22. Maddy Schramm collected a pair of quality saves early on and IUP answered on the other end with the first goal of the contest from Maggie Kilgallon.

The Bald Eagles took control the rest of the half, outscoring the Crimson Hawks 9-2 the rest of the half. IUP used a five-goal swing early into the fourth quarter to get back within 11-8.

Mass opened the scoring surge for the Hawks with her 13th of the season three and a half minutes into the third quarter at 11:30. IUP continued chipping away with the final three goals of the frame, keeping Lock Haven off the board for over 12 minutes in the stanza.

Mass closed the quarter with her second goal of the day, trimming the IUP deficit to 11-7. Burke cashed in on the free position, closing the scoring run and bringing the Hawks back within three at 11-8.

Consecutive goals for the Bald Eagles in the fourth quarter provided enough separation. LHU delivered the dagger with a player-down goal from Abby Katrinak, pushing the Bald Eagles ahead 13-8. LHU goalie Dana Mirigliano finished with 13 saves on the day, including an acrobatic stop on Macenzie Haragos off a rebound attempt early in the fourth quarter.
