IUP Athletics Preview: April 8-14, 2024

INDIANA, Pa. – Here's an overview for the week ahead in IUP Athletics.

MEN'S GOLF
April 8-9

IUP returns to North Carolina for The Trojan, hosted by Mount Olive at Walnut Creek Country Club. The Crimson Hawks are back in action for the first time since the USCB Oldfield Classic on March 26-26, finishing seventh as a team at that event.
 
Alex Swinnerton leads the IUP lineup with an average score of 73.9 this season. Shaun Fedor has four top-10 finishes to his credit this season, the most on the team (73.26 average).

Continuing to battle schedule adjustments, the IUP softball team is set for eight conference games this week. IUP split four games over the weekend, falling in a doubleheader against Seton Hill before bouncing back with a two-game sweep of Clarion.
 
IUP ranks second in the league and 29th nationally in runs/game (6.61) behind a balanced offensive approach. Delaney Patella is second in NCAA DII in walks/game (1.00), drawing a total of 28 free passes this season. Her 28 walks are already second in single-season program history, while her 59 career walks are fifth all-time.  
 
 The Crimson Hawks combined for 25 runs and 26 hits across Sunday's doubleheader sweep of Clarion. In the circle, Kendall Young (2.76 ERA) has seven complete games and 40 strikeouts.

Winners of three consecutive matches, the IUP women's tennis team has another busy week on deck. The Crimson Hawks look to continue rolling in conference play against California (Pa.) and Seton Hill this week, also hosting Salem (W.Va.) for a midweek matchup at the Maple Street Courts.
 
Katy Graydon won her second PSAC West Athlete of the Week honor this season, going 5-1 over three matches last week for the Crimson Hawks. Hannah Beitat has won four consecutive singles matchups, while Ming Deewajee and Dani Ramos boast a team-best 17 wins as a doubles pairing.

The IUP baseball program returns home this week, beginning with a nine inning game against West Liberty before beginning a four-game series with Seton Hill. The Crimson Hawks salvaged a game in the series with Slippery Rock with a 5-1 victory on Sunday.
 
Nathan Mankoski earned his second win of the season with five strong innings on the mound and Harrison Pontoli smacked a two-run home run in the victory. Ricardo Aponte leads the team with a .345 batting average and Pontoli has a team-high 23 RBI. The Hawks are fourth in the PSAC in scoring (6.4 runs/game).

The IUP women's lacrosse team looks to refocus with a pair of divisional games this week. The Crimson Hawks have lost three straight, playing well in stretches in all three setbacks. Aiming for more consistent play, the Crimson Hawks host Seton Hill and Gannon at Miller Stadium.
 
The Hawks are fourth in the PSAC West, just behind Seton Hill (4-1 PSAC) and Slippery Rock (4-1 PSAC). IUP battled back within three goals in the fourth quarter in a 13-9 setback to Lock Haven on April 6.
 
IUP has six players with 10 or more goals this season, led by Chantal Jimenez (24 G, 52 DC). Kathryn Burke paces the team with 37 points, including a team-high 17 assists going into the week.
 
M/W OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD
April 13-14
at Bison Outdoor Classic | Host: Bucknell | Meet Information
 
Continuing to close in on the conference championship meet, the IUP track team heads to Lewisburg for the two-day Bison Outdoor Classic on April 13-14. The Crimson Hawks sent a group of distance runners to the Dave Labor Invitational for the 10,000m last week, an event won by Julia O'Brien.
 
Most of the team has not competed since March 29-30 at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational. Justin Egizio is putting together a strong outdoor campaign for IUP, listed fifth on the PSAC performance list in the 200m (22.05) and fourth in the 400m (48.70). Mike Formica is also among the top five on the PSAC performance list in the 1,500m (4th; 3:55.58) and the 5,000m (5th; 14:56.93), along with Dan Gibney in the 5,000m (3rd; 14:53.46) and 3,000m steeplechase (2nd; 9:27.89).
 
The IUP women's squad has two runners among the PSAC performance list in the 400m hurdles, with Cassidy Kline and Bella Brozeski each among the top eight in the event going into the weekend. Kaylla Williams is fifth in the PSAC in the javelin with a mark of 40.06m.
