MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. — Fresh off its season-opening win the day before, IUP carried momentum into Saturday's challenging non-conference match at No. 7 Mount Olive. The Crimson Hawks raced out to a 2-0 lead after scoring just 63 seconds into the contest but were unable to stave off the Trojans in a 5-3 final defeat.
IUP (1-1) responded to level the match at 3-3 in the third quarter with
Jess Davidson's second goal and third of the season, which came 51 seconds after Mount Olive claimed its first lead of the day. Davidson controlled a loose ball, crossed the field and ripped the shot from the right side of the circle.
However, the Trojans (1-1) countered back when Sophia Frugoni tallied the game-winner at the 39:11 mark. Mount Olive added the final goal with just over nine minutes left in regulation.
Cassie Romanczuk ignited the IUP offense with the opening goal, her second in as many outings, as she finished a breakaway run down the right slot and fired to the lower left corner past the keeper.
Davidson's first goal of the match put IUP ahead 2-0 just over three minutes into the second period.
Anita Planella recorded her second straight appearance with six saves in goal for the Crimson Hawks.
IUP registered five opportunities from the penalty corner in the fourth quarter, with seven of eight total tries coming over the final two periods of play.
