GERMANTOWN, Md. — The IUP women's soccer team (1-0) launched into the 2024 season with a 2-1 road victory over Frostburg State (0-1), hosted Saturday at Maryland SoccerPlex . It's the first season-opening victory for the Crimson Hawks since 2021.
Despite letting up an early goal to Frostburg State's Jayme Sogy, IUP controlled the tempo and scored twice before halftime to overcome the deficit with goals by graduate student
Hannah Scardina and sophomore
Emily Mannion.
Scardina netted the equalizer in the 33rd minute as the three-time all-league performer finished to the lower right corner for her 29th career goal at IUP. Mannion slotted a perfect through ball to set up the Scardina strike.
Nine minutes later, Mannion blasted in the game-winner on a one-timer from the top of the box. It was the Clarion transfer's first goal as a Crimson Hawk and third of her career. The goal came as a result of a failed clear attempt by the Frostburg State keeper, when
Taylor Serrano made a great play in the box to redirect the turnover.
Scardina nearly tacked on another goal on the next IUP possession. She drilled a long-distance shot that bounced off the crossbar, one of her team-leading six shot attempts (four on frame).
Jordina Rovira Sole also tallied a shot on goal for the Hawks.
Making her first career start, goalkeeper
Makenna Yarrow registered a career-high eight saves and picked up her first career win between the pipes. The senior keeper kept her poise during a few nervy moments near the 75th minute, posting three consecutive stops in quick succession.
Frostburg State's Katie Sterne recorded four saves and was tagged with the loss.
IUP held the shot advantage in the first half (7-4) while the host Bobcats had the second-half advantage (11-3).
