IUP dropped close match with California (Pa.), 78-74

CALIFORNIA, Pa. -- IUP men's basketball stayed closely contested with California (Pa.) but were unable to match the Vulcan's late second half surge, despite 20-point performances from Moore and Merraro. 
 
IUP dropped to 10-10 overall and 6-7 in the conference while Cal U improved to 11-10 overall and 6-7 in the PSAC.
 
Christian Moore led the Hawks charge with 24 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Kymani Merraro followed closely with 20 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and one steal. Both Damir Brooks and Sarp Furtun contributed 10 points.
 
The teams exchanged baskets and the lead throughout the first half. A three-pointer by Moore at 10:45 brought the Hawks within one, trailing 21-20. Merraro ended a three-minute scoring drought with a three-pointer and a jumper, that pushed the Hawks ahead 25-23. Brooks' dunk at 3:46 evened the score at 32 apiece. Sarp Furtun's three-pointer and IUP's sixth of the half, marked the Hawks' final basket before the Vulcans tied the game at 39.
 
In the second, Brooks made a layup at 16:46 followed by another Moore three-pointer to bring the Hawks within one, 47-46. The Vulcans went on a 7-1 run that extended their lead to nine points, 66-57 at 8:49. Moore reached 20 points on the night from his fourth three-pointer at 7:29, he was assisted by Alfonso Pickens Jr.

Furtun hit another three that put IUP back within five points. Merraro made a three-point play at the minute mark that positioned the Hawks behind three points. Moore scored the final basket for the Hawks with nine seconds to spare, but Cal U secured their win with two more made free throws, 78-74.
