IUP Falls 1-0 at Slippery Rock Despite Shot Advantage

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — Indiana (Pa.) outshot Slippery Rock and controlled much of the possession but couldn't find the net in a 1-0 loss Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference women's soccer action at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

The Hawks, ranked near the top of the PSAC standings entering the match, slipped to 10-2-2 overall and 8-2-1 in conference play.

IUP fired 14 shots to Slippery Rock's 10 and earned a 5-1 edge in corner kicks, but a single second-half strike proved to be the difference. Slippery Rock's Libby Zacharyasz scored in the 53rd minute off an assist from Sophia Palermo for the lone goal.

Forward Elle Smith led the Crimson Hawks with two shots on goal, while goalkeeper Iara Silva made three saves in net.

Slippery Rock's Leah Allman stopped all four IUP shots on goal to secure the shutout.

IUP defender Melody Leiva received the game's only yellow card in the 58th minute.

The Hawks will look to bounce back and maintain their position near the top of the PSAC standings as they take on the Golden Knights of Gannon on Saturday at South Campus Field. IUP and Gannon played to a draw in the first matchup of the PSAC powers earlier in the season.
