WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The IUP field hockey team saw its season come to a close Tuesday afternoon, falling 3-2 to No. 5 West Chester in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament at Vonnie Gros Field.
The Crimson Hawks came out firing, building a 2-0 lead in the first quarter behind goals from Jess Davidson and Lilly Fringer. Davidson opened the scoring less than three minutes into the contest before Fringer doubled the advantage with a strike in the seventh minute.
West Chester responded before the end of the quarter as Caitlynn Szarko cut the deficit in half. The Golden Rams evened the score midway through the fourth before Veerle Hersman delivered the game-winner off a penalty corner with just over 12 minutes remaining.
IUP outshot the Golden Rams 16-14 and held an early edge in offensive rhythm but couldn't convert late opportunities. Celeste Pagliaroli made seven saves in goal for the Crimson Hawks, keeping the game within reach until the final whistle.
The loss ends IUP's season at 9-7 overall, marking a strong campaign that saw the Hawks return to the conference postseason picture. West Chester improved to 13-5 and advances to the PSAC semifinals.
