AIKEN, S.C. — The IUP baseball team dropped the season opener to USC Aiken after the Pacers scored five runs in the eighth inning, with a final score of 6-5.
IUP fell to 0-1 overall while the Pacers improved to 5-6.
Ricardo Aponte scored two runs, had two hits, and one stolen base. Mike Huber, Elijah Dunn, and Robert Carfagno each recorded one run.
Derrick Shields started on the mound, he allowed no base runners through bottom of the fourth.
Dunn hit a home run out to left field in the top of the second to put the Hawks on the board first. Davin Landers and Carfagno each singled but were left on base.
In the top of the third, Aponte got things rolling for the Hawks with a single to left field and stole second. Mike Huber singled to third base to put Aponte in scoring position. Huber advanced and Aponte scored on a wild pitch. David Kessler hit a single to left field that advanced Huber to third. Peyton Johnson reached base on an error that allowed Huber to score the third run of day. IUP closed the top of the third with two strikeouts.
In the bottom of the seventh, USC Aiken scored off an error.
Addison Clymer relieved Shields on the mound. In the bottom of the eighth, USC Aiken's Monlinaroli hit a home run that tied the score at three each. USC Aiken loaded the bases, and Jimmy Tooley came in for Clymer on the mound. Tooley walked three batters allowing for USC Aiken to score two more runs. Casen Sandri stepped in but gave up a walk, that pushed the Hawks behind by three.
Top of the ninth, both Au'sean Owens and Aponte recorded singles. Mitchell Grosch was hit by a pitch which loaded up the bases. Huber reached base on a fielder's choice to send Owens home and Aponte advanced to third. David Kessler also reached on a fielder's choice and sent Aponte home to pull the Hawks within one, 6-5. With two outs Johnson hit a ground ball and a force play was made at second base to end the game. The Hawks lost, 6-5.
